Overall Elevator Pitch
ABC in a few sentences:
ABC is no longer an operating organization. From 1999-2014ish we supported individuals and groups making thriving communities more humane and sustainable through process arts--group process design and facilitation. Our individual and organizational members made peace as a cultural art form through the daily practice of conflict done well. This website continues as a record of our work and historical home of the Peace Practices Project. We invite you to learn more by exploring.
Our mission:
Community On Purpose

Building community on purpose leads to humanity becoming more humane. Association Building Community is a modular intentional community providing peace training, learning "conflict done well", and developing the process arts, the field of group process study, design, and facilitation. We provide strategic consulting and professional leadership training, develop community resilience projects, and support associated colleagues in creating and sustaining community-building initiatives. We are committed to practicing these values and sharing them with decision-makers, children and the adults who help them grow, and opening doors of opportunity so that conflict-process skills may be developed both locally and internationally.
Just the Elevator Pitch:
There is a magical fix for getting through conflict--practice.
- Building community on purpose is essential so that humanity becomes more humane.
- "Community" coming to be defined as "where everyone is treated humanely" is another way of saying "Peace", which is the daily practice of conflict done well rather than, for instance, an absence of conflict.
- Realizing this idea of peace requires practice, much like a martial art requires practice, so we practice and advocate for the process arts (group process design and facilitation) to become more humane, and offer programs and training to this end.
- Our primary and largest project to date is called Peace Practices, an initiative with international funding dedicated to shifting entire communities towards a practice of peace that prepares the body and mind to communicate, in a way that is both martial in feel and non-violent, our dedication to co-creating solutions which work for everyone involved.
- We are now four professionals (CEO/Program Director, Executive Assistant, and two Assistant Instructors) engaged with more than 100 children (almost 100% participation) and a dozen adults on two Montessori school campuses in the San Francisco Bay Area. In 2016 the Peace Practices curriculum will be national, and in 2017 international.
- We have requests from private, public, parochial, and charter schools, in addition to many individual parents, to offer this training all over the San Francisco Bay Area. Our development is restricted only by the number of instructors we have available and additional funding to create a resilient organization that can support their teaching.
- The story being written through Peace Practices points toward a future where people who practice conflict done well identify as Guardians of Peace and use their individual and collective civil power to shape a diverse and dynamic world of which human beings may be proud.
